The African Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development (FPA) seeks to ensure that African parliaments support a sound implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD PoA). Its main activities consist in parliamentary conferences, workshops and delegations at national, regional and international levels which aim to:
- Engage African parliamentarians on addressing population and development issues and advancing international agreements of the United Nations (UN) including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the ICPD Programme of Action (ICPD PoA), the Beijing Platform for Action for Equality, Development and Peace (Beijing PfA).
- Monitor the commitment of the African Union and its Member States to the implementation of the AU Roadmap on the Demographic Dividend.
- Call African governments to support the adoption and implementation of comprehensive policies for SRHR, HIV/AIDS and gender equality.
Regional and International Cooperation
In the framework of its activities, FPA cooperates with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and with civil society organisations such as the International Planned Parenthood Federation Africa Regional Office (IPPF ARO) along with other parliamentary networks active on population and development across the world.
